Training

Climate Emergency Australia has recently developed an exciting new micro-credential for senior leaders in local government.

Governing in the Climate Emergency is for councillors, CEOs and Executive team members who want to:
  • Expand their leadership
  • Deepen their understanding of what it means to govern well during the climate emergency
  • Understand climate risk and the role of local government in managing it
  • Strengthen their council’s climate emergency response
  • Connect with and learn from peers around Australia.

The pilot program ran in early 2024 with 14 senior leaders from around the country. They heard from and interacted with expert speakers, learnt from and with peers, used our self-assessment checklist to put their learning into immediate action. They also gave us feedback and have helped us refine the training, which has run twice in 2025 and will run once more this year.

Running over 4 live, interactive, online sessions from, the course provides a safe space to reflect, share and learn with other senior leaders.

For councils in WA, NSW, QLD and Victoria in particular, this is a great opportunity for recently elected councillors to get up to speed with why climate emergency leadership is so important at the local government level, including understanding their roles and responsibilities and the opportunities to collaborate with other councils.
