Capacity-building and resources
Declaring and acting on a climate emergency is not just about reducing emissions faster than usual - it also requires new forms of governance, mobilising our councils and communities and advocating to other levels of government.

Our members are working on finding the most effective forms of governance and action to respond to the climate emergency.

To support them, Climate Emergency Australia:
  • hosts and records webinars for councillors and staff
  • runs an online forum for officers to share resources and develop best practice in responding to the climate emergency
  • coordinates and records regular live discussion forums for officers for peer-to-peer learning and networking
  • recently developed a training program for senior leaders in local government, Governing in the Climate Emergency
  • provides tools such as checklists, templates and case studies
  • organised the Climate Emergency Conference 2024 in partnership with Maribyrnong City Council and supported by Victoria University.

  • CEDAMIA: provides an up-to-date list of Australian and international jurisdictions that have declared with links to their motions, media releases and plans, and many more resources.
  • Climate Emergency UK inspire and support UK council climate action, including through their Council Climate Action Scorecards.
  • Local Government NSW has a fantastic collection of video case studies showcasing council initiatives designed to help their communities adapt to climate change, and much more.
  • The Local Government Association of South Australia hosts a suite of resources on Climate risk assessment and planning, including training modules that councils can adapt and run for their senior leaders and Audit and Risk Committees, case studies, and a range of other tools.
  • The Local Government Climate Emergency Toolkit is just what it sounds like. Written by former councillor Dale Martin, it's free to download (scroll halfway down in Sustainability Help).
  • Safe Climate Australia (aka Breakthrough National Centre for Climate Restoration) is an independent climate think-tank and provides up to date reports and briefings on scientific and political developments.
