Climate Emergency Conference 2024
Councils and communities reclaiming the climate emergency
2023 was the hottest year on earth in recorded history and we saw the increasing impacts of climate change around the world and here in Australia. By 2024 the need for urgent action to reverse global warming had never been clearer. The Climate Emergency Conference 2024 aimed to reinvigorate climate action by councils and communities to reverse global warming and restore a safe climate.
Day 1: Friday 19 April, 2024 Victoria University, Footscray Park and online
Climate Emergency Australia in partnership with Maribyrnong City Council and supported by Victoria University hosted around 200 people in person at the Climate Emergency Conference 2024 in Melbourne and many more tuned in online from around the country. The conference aimed to reinvigorate climate action by councils and communities to reverse global warming and restore a safe climate. It provided an opportunity to connect and reflect, share the lessons learned from more than six years of climate emergency responses at the local government level, to re-focus our collective climate emergency action and talk about the next steps needed to restore a safe climate. You can view the full program.
Day 2: Tuesday 23 April, 2024, online
Climate Emergency Australia in partnership with Victorian Climate Resilient Councils hosted Adaptation in Action, an online forum showcasing council projects and collaboration across Australia. Following this session was the Closing Plenary on Climate, health and community resilience. This session explored recent research about and on-ground examples of communities dealing with climate impacts, and looked at approaches to building preparedness and resilience in communities experiencing extreme weather and other climate events and their flow-on effects.
