​Host an anniversary event
​

We are coordinating a range of activities and communications in the lead up to 5 December 2026 - the 10th anniversary of the world’s first Climate Emergency Declaration. The aim of the Ten Years Project is to reinvigorate enthusiasm for climate emergency action at the local government level, both within councils and in the broader community and to celebrate Australia’s pioneering role. We also want to demonstrate that we don’t all have to fly around the country in order to connect with each other - locally, regionally and nationally. Find out how your council can get involved!

Host a watch party

We are seeking councils to host a local watch party to connect to the national conversation on Wednesday 2 December.
Melbourne Polytechnic will be hosting us in Melbourne for a face-to-face event and this will be livestreamed around the country. Participants will be able to access the livestream from home, or even better, from a local watch party where they can connect with colleagues from their city or region, or even just their own council.

​If you would like to host a watch party, this could be as simple as booking a meeting room with a screen for your team. Alternatively, you could book a larger viewing space (maybe your council chambers, a library or other space that is well set up for viewing a livestream) and inviting colleagues from across your councils and even neighbouring councils.
To host a larger watch party of this kind, there are some things your council will need to have in place.

Venue needs
  • Essential:
    • A good quality, large screen that is internet-enabled or able to connect to your council network (this could be a TV screen in a meeting room, or a projector connected to a laptop or desktop computer)
    • Room and seating for as many people as you want to host
    • Strong, reliable wifi or connection to your network

  • Ideal:
    • A break-out area for networking/discussion breaks
    • Tea, coffee, water and snacks (no expectation of lunch or other meals to be provided – this can be BYO or attendees can go to a local café)

Staff and capabilities
  • Essential:
    • Staff member to help coordinate in the lead-up to the event, including inviting internal and external guests and/or taking bookings (if relevant), liaising with CEA
    • Staff available to help people from other councils to access the venue
    • Support from your IT team and/or someone who is familiar with the room and tech set-up to provide tech support on the day and communicate with tech facilitators as needed

  • Ideal:
    • Someone to act as host on the day (welcome, explain proceedings, usher people to break-out spaces and back)
    • Staff available to help people from other councils to access the venue (if applicable)
    • Support from your Events & Venues team
    • Invite your CEO or director (or Mayor or councillor) to welcome staff and visiting colleagues at the start of the day – and stay to listen/participate (if applicable)

Host a community event

If your council would like to involve your community in the anniversary celebrations (on Saturday 5 December or in the lead-up) here are some options you could consider.

  • Host your own independent anniversary event for your community 
  • Add something (a stall, a guest speaker, a community afternoon tea) to an existing event around this time (eg Carols in the Park, community festivals, festive markets etc)
  • Brand any existing climate/environmental activities as an anniversary event (e.g. local tours, festivals, expos, seminars/webinars, etc)
  • Promote local Climate Emergency highlights in your end-of year-communications
  • Amplify communications from CEA for the anniversary.

Host a climate cafe 

Climate Emergency Australia facilitates regular climate cafes for councils.
Your council could host a climate cafe for your staff, for councils in your region, or for your community. This could be online or face-to-face.
