10 actions your council can take in the lead-up to the anniversary

CEA invites all Australian councils to take 10 actions in the lead up to 5 December 2026:

Here are some suggested actions you/your council can take.

1. Support the sovereignty of local First Nations

Support state-based treaties through Together for Treaty (if this is supported by local First Nations – noting that state-based treaties are not universally supported, with some groups preferring to advocate only for a national treaty based on international law)
Support frontline communities who are under threat from mining (e.g. Wangan & Jagalingu, Environs Kimberley, and groups in your region)
Strengthen partnerships with local traditional owners; include co-governance with locally appropriate processes; review your policies together to make sure they support the sovereignty of TOs in your area and are aligned with the strategies of local First Nations.

2. Stand with Pacific and Torres Strait Islands leaders on climate

Support the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative
Support resilience and adaptation in TSIs through traditional knowledge (eg by supporting Climates and Sea of Nations
Support community leaders and young people in the Pacific to get to COP31 (via Climates and/or Our Islands Our Home)
Support PICAN and/or a Pacific sister city

3. Support youth leaders on climate

Review your council’s support of youth climate initiatives – do you have a youth councils or advisory committee, grants for youth groups? Come to our webinar in September to find out how.
Support SEED and AYCC
Support Duty of Care campaigns in your state

4. Share your stories of success

5. Recognise and act on the biodiversity crisis

If your council has made a declaration but didn’t include biodiversity, consider formally recognising the biodiversity crisis
Adopt ambitious local canopy targets, species protection targets, revegetation targets and/or ecosystem restoration targets
Be part of Cities with Nature

6. Advocate for a fair transition away from fossil fuels

Support Communities for Climate Compensation and get your council to move a motion to Make Big Polluters Pay

7. Get your leaders trained: Governing in the Climate Emergency

8. Take the next step on your climate journey
